'All Star Family Fortunes', broadcast between the two 'X Factor' shows averaged 6.3m and a 25.7% share.
On BBC One 'Strictly Come Dancing' powered to 9.4m and a 40% share, peaking at 10.2m, while tea-time sword and sorcery drama 'Merlin' continued to do well pulling in 5.8m and a 23% share.
'The National Lottery: Who Dares Wins' shows averaged 4.5m and 'Casualty' at 9pm managed an average of 5.6m.
On Sunday the dramatic finale to the Formula 1 season delivered a huge afternoon audience for ITV1, with an average of 8.7m viewers watching the race in Brazil between 4pm and 7pm, a 40.7% share for the channel.
With Lewis Hamilton winning the championship in the final lap the Sony-sponsored coverage attracted a peak of 12.5m viewers in the last fifteen minutes.
That gave ITV1's second helping of fame school drama 'Britannia High' a massive opportunity to improve on its disappointing debut showing of 3.3m viewers.
This time it managed 5.7m with a share of 22.7%, but the average masked the fact it started with 10m and finished at 8pm with just 3.8m.
The drop was again due to people's preference for BBC One's 'Antiques Roadshow' at 7.15pm-8.15pm, which pulled in 8.9m and a 34.6% share.
The new series of 'Top Gear' at 8pm-9pm on BBC Two, brought in 7m and a 24.7% share. Combined with BBC One's 'Strictly Come Dancing' results show, it gave ITV1's 'Heartbeat' a beating.
GMTV presenter Andrew Castle was voted off the dance show with 8.5m watching, giving BBC One a 30% share, while 'Heartbeat' attracted 4.8m and a 17.1% share.
At 9pm it was nearly level pegging between the two main channels with 'Stephen Fry in America' pulling in 6m over its 60 minutes and 'Sharpe's Peril' on ITV1 managing 5.7m over 90 minutes.
