ITV plans November launch on satellite

LONDON - The long-running battle between BSkyB and ITV over the terrestrial network's access to satellite is set to move up a level as ITV plans its own launch on to satellite.

According to a report in the Financial Times, ITV plans to start broadcasting its terrestrial channels to homes with Sky dishes from November, but it has not signed an agreement with BSkyB.

Pressure has come from ITV's advertisers to make the channel available on satellite as well as terrestrial, as the number of subscribers to BSkyB increases to more than 5m.

ITV has been trying to come to an agreement with Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB over delivery, in an attempt to win back viewers who are less likely to access terrestrial television once they have their TVs set up to receive digital services.

It is rumoured that BSkyB was seeking £20m from ITV for the satellite broadcaster to host its channel, but ITV was said to be offering in the region of £5m.

ITV has its own digital service, the Carlton Communications- and Granada-owned ITV Digital, but its subscriber base is less than one-third of BSkyB's, with the service going to only 1.3m homes.
