ITV Digital adds 48,000 customers

LONDON - Troubled terrestrial digital broadcaster ITV Digital added 48,000 subscribers to its network during June, beating analyst expectations of 30,000.

ITV Digital, which was rebranded from ONdigital last week, now has 1.135m subscribers and says it is on target to reach its break-even target of 1.7m in 2004. During the same period, Sky bagged an extra 160,000 customers giving it more than 5m subscribers overall.

Sales for the first two weeks of July, which the company says is traditionally one of its quietest periods, are said to have continued at a similar pace.

The broadcaster said public response to its TV ad campaign featuring comedian Johnny Vegas and a puppet has been good. It also claims that interest in its proposed sports channel ITV Sport, which launches on August 11, has been high.

The channel will carry live matches from the Uefa Champions League and the Nationwide Football League and Worthington Cup games.

ITV Active, formerly ONnet the broadcaster's interactive TV offering, has signed up more than 100 content partners including Tesco, Northern Rock, Fish4, Dateline, House of Chocolate and Holiday Autos.

ITV chief executive Stuart Prebble said, "These are solid figures. We are delivering against our targets. The rebranding is a major step in the evolution of this business and the decision to put the powerful ITV brand behind the platform is an indication of our shareholders' commitment to it."

ITV Digital was reported earlier this week to have been in negotiations with NTL. That deal would see the cable operator take over ITV Digital, lifting the burden from Carlton and Granada which are forecast to have invested £1.1bn in the brand before it is due to break even in 2003. The speculation, however, was denied by both parties.
