ITV gives The X Factor a callback for a second series

LONDON – ITV has said that its Saturday night reality TV talent show 'The X Factor' is to be recommissioned for a second series.

The broadcaster says favourable ratings including the programme attracting an estimated half of the available 16- to 34-year-old sector, has prompted the announcement as the show's current run draws to a close. The show has regularly attracted audiences of 6.5m, which is seen as good for its Saturday night slot.

Claudia Rosencratz, ITV entertainment controller, said: "I had no hesitation in recommissioning 'The X-Factor', it's been a big hit for ITV and has become must-watch TV.

"There's much more to come this series as we build towards the final next month and it's great to have secured this terrific format for our viewers for another series."

The final programme is due to take place on December 11. The remaining acts are Tabby Callaghan, G4 and Steve Brookstein. On Saturday, former Happy Mondays singer Rowetta Statchell was the latest contestant to be voted off the show.

The show's creator and judge Simon Cowell said: "Working on 'The X Factor' has been a blast. I think the production team have done an amazing job."

Cowell has regularly clashed with his fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh. The judging fireworks have helped make the show pull in viewers.
