ITV board called on to face shareholder vote

LONDON - The board of ITV should put itself up for re-election following the broadcaster's botched attempts to hire a new chief executive and chairman, according to corporate governance body Pirc.

A Pirc spokesman told the Daily Telegraph: "Given that there is unease here, what would be the right thing is the whole board offering themselves up for re-election at next year's AGM.

"This is increasingly common when you have had a bruising encounter with shareholders."

ITV board members stand for re-election every three years, and Sir James Crosby, who chairs the broadcaster's nominations committee, is not up for re-election until 2011.

The broadcaster is searching for both a chairman and chief executive, after talks with former BSkyB boss Tony Ball over the CEO role broke down publicly.

The chairman of ITV, Michael Grade, said he would leave once his replacement is appointed.

According to the Telegraph one of the candidates for Grade's role now includes CBI president, Helen Alexander, who has rebuffed an approach for the Channel 4 chairman role.

Other frontrunners for Grade's role include Sir Crispin Davis, the former boss of publisher Reed-Elsevier.

ITV declined to comment.
