IPC back on top as Uncut and NME beat Emap rivals

LONDON - IPC Media music titles have overtaken their Emap rivals as monthly title Uncut goes from strength to strength in the latest ABCs to overtake Emap's Mojo for the first time, while NME has clawed back the weekly crown from Kerrang!.

The music and movies monthly Uncut, which comes with a covermount CD each issue, recorded an Audit Bureau of Circulations figure of 105,781 for the January-June 2003 period, an impressive rise of 16% period on period and 26.7% year on year.

Uncut beat its closet rival, Emap's mature music title Mojo, by a shade over 2,000 copies. Mojo, however, was also a riser, increasing its circulation by 3.2% period on period and 3.5% year on year to 103,654.

NME brought IPC mixed blessings. While it beat the Emap-owned Kerrang! to regain the top music weekly title, it dropped 1.2% period on period to 72,443, recording an overall rise of 0.5% year on year.

Kerrang!, on the other hand, appears to have been hit by the growing move away from nu-metal music towards a more "indie" rock sound. It dropped 16.4% period on period to 70,361, a year-on-year fall of 16.2%.

Future's metal magazine Metal Hammer, rose 1% period on period to record a circulation of 35,876, a seeming recovery from a year-on-year slide of 18.6%. The Bath-based publisher's Classic Rock monthly put on 8.1% period on period and 12.9% year on year to climb to 43,545.

Emap, however, still has the top-selling music magazine in monthly Q. It recorded an ABC of 172, 557, a year-on-year rise of 7.2%, but a fall of 4.2% period on period and still a way off its December 2001 figure of 200,636. Next time around it should face a little competition from Future's monthly Bang, which launched in February and has yet to record an ABC.

There was bad news, as ever, for the dance music sector. After the closure of Ministry of Sound's Ministry, it was the turn of IPC's Muzik, which shut its doors at the start of July. The only dance title left in the ABC rundown is Emap's Mixmag, which was down 11.4% period on period and 28.2% year on year, a statistic that does not bode well for the sector.
