IPA Council this week named MacLennan to take over in April 2007, when David Pattison's term ends. His appointment is the culmination of a three-month selection process led by Stephen Woodford, the immediate past president.
MacLennan, 45, is a long-serving Saatchi loyalist. He built his reputation on the British Airways and Gallaher accounts at the Charlotte Street agency and was one of the first senior executives to switch to M&C Saatchi when it launched in 1995.
He was elected to the IPA council in April 1995 and is the chairman of the IPA client services group. He will relinquish this role when he becomes the president.
