In a report at the weekend, institutional investors were talking of approaching non-executive members of the Carlton board in an effort to remove Green if the situation does not improve in the next two to three months.
Shareholders are unhappy that they are having to continue subsidising the loss-making ITV Digital, which has already lost £800m and is set to lose another £300m before it breaks even in 2003.
These moves come despite ITV Digital's good news last week when it revealed that it had increased subscriber numbers ahead of targets. It added 82,000 subscribers, raising its total number to 1.2m.
However, it remains more than 4m subscribers adrift of BSkyB, which continues to dominate the UK pay-TV market.
Carlton and Granada also moved last week to dampen speculation that ITV Digital would be shut down, although talks to find a partner are believed to be ongoing.
BSkyB, which had at one time been seen as a possible investor in the business, has ruled out any kind of deal with ITV Digital.
