Industry battles through riots but some events cancelled

As fear and riots spread around the UK last night, the event industry had a mixed experience with some venues closing early. But, for most, it was business as usual.

"We continue to work closely with the tourism and events industry to understand the effects of the past few days. The majority of London attractions have remained open and the capital has continued to host major events such as the Yonex Badminton World Championships which have all demonstrated the capital’s resilience," said a statement from London promotional agency London & Partners.

The Mayor’s Office, whose head came under some criticism for failing to return speedily from his summer holiday, said that London remains open for business and "one of the safest cities in the world".

Marketing Manchester also said that it has not been given notice of any events being postponed, a situation unfortunately not repeated in London, despite the relative lack of vandalism last night.

Proud Camden in North London was one of the venues affected. It was planning to stay open as late as 4pm yesterday afternoon (9 August), but on the "advice of the police and insurance companies" cancelled events. It is, however, open again today.

The situation was repeated at The O2. "We closed early as a precautionary measure after consultations," said The O2 events director Sally Davies. "But it’s business as usual today, we have not been affected."

Following the cancellation of tonight’s England against the Netherlands international football friendly at Wembley event organisers remain unsure if any large-scale events will go ahead this week. Corporate hospitality providers at Premiership football grounds hoping to start the new season with a big bash will have to wait until later in the week to find out whether fixtures will go ahead.
