The staff affected by the cuts, which reportedly include reporters and sub-editors, were informed yesterday.
Imogen Haddon, managing editor of The Independent and Independent on Sunday, told staff in an email last night: "We have now spoken to the individuals at risk of redundancy and we would like to let you know that, if you have not been spoken to now, your job is not at risk.
"I am very sorry that this is such a difficult time for everyone."
The cuts come less than a week after the National Union of Journalists suspended planned industrial action over the threat of compulsory redundancies.
IN&M announced last November that 90 jobs, about 60 of them editorial, would be cut from its national newspaper division in the UK to save £10m.
The firm is looking to complete the reductions before The Independent and Independent on Sunday operations move next month from their Docklands headquarters to share the Kensington offices of Associated Newspapers.
IN&M opted for the move in addition to previously announced plans to share back office functions.
Brand Republic contacted Ivan Fallon, Independent News & Media UK chief executive, for comment yesterday but he had not responded by the time of publication.
