
ABC circulation figures show The Independent dropped its circulation by 16.76% to a daily average of 198,445 while The Independent on Sunday was also down 21.63% year on year (YoY) for the period between March to August. The Independent has the lowest circulation of all the quality national papers bar The Herald and The Scotsman.
Northern and Shell's The Daily Star managed to increase its circulation by an impressive 16.65% YoY for the period despite all other dailies continuing the trend for a reduction in circulation. The Daily Star on Sunday also showed a small increase of 1.32% YoY. The only other Sunday paper to increase circulation was News International's The Sunday Times, up 2.45% YoY for the period.
The Sunday papers generally showed poor performance with The Sunday Herald recording the second worst drop in circulation, after the Independent on Sunday, with a decrease of 14.19% YoY. This was followed by Associated's the Sunday Mail, which had a drop of 10.9% YoY for the period. The Observer, which owner Guardian Media Group has reportedly considered closing, was down 8.10% YoY.
News International's The Sun still holds the position as the UK's most bought daily newspaper. It recorded a circulation of 3,052,480 for the period, down slightly by 2.25% YoY. Its Sunday title, News of the World, was down 5.17% to an average of 3,026,264.
Trinity Mirror's Daily Mirror was down 9.44% YoY for the period to a circulation of 1,331,108. Northern and Shell's Daily Express remained largely steady, down 1.32% to an average of 727,824 for the period. Associated's Daily Mail was down 4.45% YoY to an average of 2,178,462.
