Thursday's edition of the newspaper will be a special compact one, including a 32-page section on the Budget, which is being handed down by Chancellor Gordon Brown this afternoon.
According to The Independent, the move "will give all readers the opportunity to sample the award-winning format that has won plaudits since its launch in September".
Yesterday The Guardian revealed that it had not ruled out a change for format. However it is looking at something midway between tabloid and broadsheet in size, possibly the Berliner format used by French newspaper Le Monde. The Guardian's circulation has been slipping since the introduction of tabloid formats by The Independent and The Times, down by 3.5% in February.
The Independent originally introduced a tabloid edition within the M25 to target commuters who wanted to read a quality newspaper in a more convenient format.
But with rising circulation and industry plaudits, it has already scrapped the broadsheet edition in Wales, the South West of England, Ireland and Scotland, leading to speculation that it could eventually dump the format completely.
