The amount of coverage given to the awards by the corporation will only be surpassed by Glastonbury festival, with BBC One, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 set to broadcast the event, as well as providing behind-the-scenes access to viewers and listeners.

The awards will celebrate the year’s best popular music and awards will include artist of the year and song of the year. The event will be hosted by radio DJs Fearne Cotton and Chris Evans.

The BBC Music Awards launch is part of the broadcaster’s new music strategy, which encompasses TV and radio programming, digital services and provisions to support emerging  musical talent throughout the country.

Charlotte Moore, controller for BBC One, said: "I think this is a fantastic opportunity for BBC One to collaborate with Radio 1 and Radio 2 and host this unique celebration of music in the UK.

"The BBC has always been a destination for new and established musical talent, and by bringing the two together the BBC Music Awards promises to give viewers and listeners an unforgettable night."
