IHT repositions to play up New York Times link

HONG KONG - The International Herald Tribune is seeking to emphasise its proposition as a global news publication, having altered its front-page tagline from 'published by the New York Times' to 'the global edition of the New York Times'.

A spokesperson for the IHT explained that the change was representative of a push for greater integration between the two newspapers, but added that it would not mark any change in editorial direction.

With newsrooms in New York, Paris and Hong Kong, the IHT is aiming to operate as a 24-hour news organisation, the spokesman said, noting that in contrast to the New York Times, which had no circulation strategy outside the US, the IHT is edited for an international audience.

In Asia-Pacific, the IHT is affiliated with Asahi Shimbun in Japan, and Joongang Daily in South Korea. Its Hong Kong newsroom, which forms a base for the region, opened in 2005.
