IAB hires Eyre for chairman role

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has lured one of the media industry's biggest hitters, Richard Eyre, to become its chairman.

Eyre, the former chief executive at ITV, Capital Radio, and Pearson Television, will lead the organisation's drive to double the share of advertising expenditure taken by interactive media in his first year in charge.

He will oversee the direction of the IAB's policy alongside Danny Meadows-Klue, who remains as chief executive. Eyre's task includes chairing the IAB Leadership Council, composed of 20 advertisers who share best practice and develop recommendations to improve the impact of online advertising, which accounts for 1% of total UK adspend across all media.

"I want the IAB to continue with the level of maturity it has created where people put rivalries to one side in favour of the bigger picture," Eyre said. He added that advances in technology meant the internet was beginning to prove itself as a viable brand-building medium as well as a direct response tool.

During his six-year tenure at Capital Radio, from 1991-97, Eyre expanded the group from two to 12 stations. He was ITV chief executive from 1997 to 2000, after which he integrated Pearson TV into RTL following the 2000 merger. Prior to his senior media roles, Eyre spent 16 years in advertising agencies. He was also one of the founders of the Radio Advertising Bureau in 1991.

Since leaving RTL, Eyre has taken on a number of non-executive posts, which include being an adviser to 19 Management, creators of Pop Idol, and as non-executive chairman of independent TV producer RDF Media.

Meadows-Klue joined the IAB three years ago after quitting his position leading the Telegraph's new media initiatives.
