Speaking at the annual reception of the all-party parliamentary media group, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt outlined superfast broadband and local media as areas of immediate interest for the new coalition government.
Hunt said: "If we get the regulatory framework right within the next five years, we could have the fastest broadband in Europe."
He added: "We have a responsibility to create a regulatory framework that’s in tune with the digital age, which allows industries to develop new business models that are going to work."
Hunt reiterated his support for a strong BBC, but said he also supported strong competition for the corporation. He added that the media sector could be as important to the economy as financial services.
He noted: "The UK [has the potential to] have the most exciting media industry in the world."
Hunt went on to say the government did not view its role as supporting businesses or business models that were struggling, but as helping industries adapt to change.
He said: "In the local media sector, we want to allow convergence of a new type of totally cross-platform, multimedia companies. We want to be the first country in the world to allow what’s a dying industry, to become one of the most prosperous."
