Hunt calls on comms industry to help shape government policy

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has called for ideas that will help his department promote the development of new business models and new sectors, as well as protect intellectual property, as the Government embarks on the work of producing a new Communications Act.

In a short video statement issued today (17 May), Hunt identified the UK’s creative and digital industries as "areas of huge potential" for the economy.

The culture, media, sport and Olympics secretary urged the industry to contribute to the new Communications Bill, in order to make the country’s regulations "world beating" and to take Britain’s communications industry "to the next level".

Hunt said that the Government was looking to develop new sectors in the industry and "turbo-charge" growth in current sectors, while examining rules around intellectual property.

He said: "We want to look at deregulation, so that we can allow people who operate in the communications industry in this country to develop new business models that haven’t been tried anywhere else in the world.

"We want to look at our content industries and work out how we can protect the intellectual property rights in the best way possible," he added.

The consultation is open until 30 June and the results, together with other work from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, will inform a Green Paper to be published before Christmas.
