Homer took 38% of the votes, ahead of the star of the eponymous-named show 'Frasier', who took 14%, and Jennifer Aniston's character in hit comedy 'Friends', who took 10% in third place.
In sixth place was Buffy Summers from 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', which yesterday saw the final episode of the show air on Sky One in a spectacular end of season and series finale. The final season will air on the BBC next year.
However, 'Friends' and 'The Simpsons' were beaten by 24-hour news channel CNN as the TV content most representative of the US.
The survey, by BBC Magazines' Radio Times, asked respondents about their perception of US TV and how influential they thought it was.
It found that three quarters of viewers only believed 50% or less of its coverage of the war in Iraq, while 82% of those who took part in the poll thought its influence on UK culture had increased in the last decade.
Around 7,000 people took part in the poll, the full results of which are published in the current edition of Radio Times.
Others making the top 10 included John Carter from 'ER', President Bartlet from 'The West Wing' and Carrie Bradshaw from 'Sex and the City'.
