Mersey Television, which is also behind 'Grange Hill' and created axed soap 'Brookside', has appointed Deloitte to review its options, following the financial gains that have come with the merging of independent production houses and the BBC's recent pledge to increase its indie quota.
Mersey is owned by founder and chairman Phil Redmond and private equity firm LDC. The shareholders are said to be interested in bids from prospective buyers and are said to be "keeping an open mind about their investments", according to reports over the weekend.
Redmond set up the company in 1982, following the launch of Channel 4 the same year, to provide the fourth broadcaster with contemporary drama.
Its biggest show for almost 20 years was the Liverpool-set soap 'Brookside', which was axed by Channel 4 towards the of 2002.
In November last year, Redmond wrote to culture secretary Tessa Jowell asking her to sell Channel 4 so he can run it with its public service broadcaster commitments for the next 10 years.
Mersey TV declined to comment at the time of publication.
