Mersey TV's Phil Redmond makes offer to buy Channel 4

LONDON – Phil Redmond, chairman of Mersey TV, the production company behind 'Hollyoaks' and axed soap 'Brookside', has written to culture secretary Tessa Jowell asking her to sell Channel 4 so he can run it with its public service broadcaster commitments for the next 10 years.

According to Broadcast magazine, Redmond's letter to Jowell says that while most industry observers, including Channel 4's own management, take a pessimistic view of its future, Mersey TV does not and he then offers to run the channel.

"As a result, we would be prepared to buy at any agreed third-party open market valuation and gladly run the channel with its current remit intact for a minimum of the next 10 years."

Redmond delivered a key note speech at last week's Nations and Regions conference in Manchester, where he told an audience about his proposed plans.

"Channel 4 needs to be commercial, otherwise it's death by a thousand cuts," he said.

"We need to show confidence in a privatised Channel 4. We can't wait for five years to see what the digital future holds. Which is why I'm offering to buy Channel 4 from the government and run it," he said.

Redmond's comments are bound to cause controversy at Channel 4, which only recently announced it would need around £100m a year from the government to meet its public service requirements.

Mersey TV produces weeknightly teen drama 'Hollyoaks' for Channel 4 and used to make the hit Channel 4 soap 'Brookside', which made stars out of Anna Friel, Amanda Burton, Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston.

Channel 4 axed the soap last year as ratings for the show, which debuted on the channel when it first launched in 1984, collapsed.
