Herald Tribune ownership talks spark questions over paper's future

LONDON - The future of the International Herald Tribune is under review as talks between its joint owners, Washington Post and the New York Times, lead to speculation that the paper could turn into an international version of the Times.

Herald Tribune ownership talks spark questions over paper's future

Reports suggest that the New York Times is concerned that the Herald is proving a drain on resources, and is looking at ways of making it pay its way.

One idea said to be under discussion, which has been mooted in the past, is that the New York Times buying the Post's 50% stake and turning the Herald into an international edition of the Times.

New York Times president and chief executive Russ Lewis is believed to be keen to expand the Times internationally, and in an interview in the Financial Times earlier this month talked about his global ambitions for the paper.

In the summer, the Times piloted a 12-page supplement with French newspaper Le Monde, which carried extracts from the Times in English.

However, this is not the only option being discussed for the paper. There is no suggestion that the paper would be closed.

The Herald contains editorial from both titles, and has always been viewed as a good way of giving their stories international coverage. Although the publication has lost money, its reputation and branding has made it a worthwhile cost. Most of its losses have been offset by the Herald's conference business.

For the Post, the Herald has been the only vehicle for international distribution of its editorial. Katherine Graham, the former publisher of the Post who died last year, had very close ties with the paper. Her son, Donald Graham, has taken over as chief executive of the Washington Post Company.

The Herald refused to comment on the reports, except to confirm that talks were being held.
