Heartbeat triumphs over BBC One wildlife series with 6.8m

LONDON - BBC One's new wildlife documentary series 'Tiger - Spy in the Jungle' was beaten by ITV1's perennial favourite 'Heartbeat' last night, which pulled in 6.8m viewers.

'Heartbeat' attracted a 26.5% share of the audience at 8pm, for the second episode in a 15-part series.

'Tiger -Spy in the Jungle', which features innovative footage of tigers and other animals in their natural habitat using camera lenses built into tree trunks, was watched by 6.3m viewers in the same slot.

The show, which is narrated by David Attenborough and has been heavily promoted by the BBC, attracted a 24.4% share of the audience.

Channel 4 science documentary 'Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe', drew a respectable 860,000 viewers and a 3.7% share at 7pm.

It was the first hour-long instalment of a two-part series, looking at how our understanding of the Universe has developed. Including Channel 4+1, it managed 908,000 viewers and a 3.9% share.

ITV1's new crime drama 'He Kills Coppers' sank to 2.5m viewers from 3.8m last week, giving the broadcaster yet another unsuccessful new commission in its winter schedule. The second part of the three part series brought a 10% share at 9pm.

However, the 9pm slot was won by BBC One's 'Casualty 1907' with 6.7m viewers and a 26.8% share.
