Ashes to Ashes departs with 5.4m viewers

LONDON - The last episode of BBC One drama 'Ashes to Ashes', which has been commissioned for a second series, bowed out with 5.4m viewers last night, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The sequel to the hit-show 'Life on Mars', which attracted a 22.9% share, has been recommissioned following strong ratings and feedback from fans.

The series stars 'Spooks' actress Keeley Hawes as Alex Drake, a psychological profiler whose partner, DI Gene Hunt, is played by 'Life on Mars' actor Philip Glenister.

ITV1 crime drama 'Trial and Retribution' drew 4.3m viewers and a 17.9% share at 9pm, while Five's US import 'House' pulled in 1.8m viewers and a 7.4% share in the same slot.

Channel 4 aired a documentary about an incestuous relationship between a half-brother and his sister at 9pm. 'Sleeping with my Sister' brought in 1.9m viewers and a 7.9% share, with the audience rising to 2.1m and an 8.8% on Channel 4+1.

ITV will be disappointed with the opening night audience for its new US import 'Gossip Girl'. The ITV2 drama, which has been backed by a marketing campaign, managed only 293,000 viewers and a 1.6% share of the multi-channel audience at 10pm.

The series follows a group of privileged New York teenagers on Manhattan's Upper East Side, who rely on the elusive blogger, "gossip girl", to learn the latest rumours about their exclusive inner circle.
