The appointment follows an expansion of the Heart brand, after owner Chrysalis' acquisition earlier this month of 106 Century FM from Capital Radio. The station is expected to be rebranded as Heart East Midlands later this year.
Chrysalis Radio chief executive Phil Riley said Currie's new role was vital as the firm attempts to cement Heart 106.2's leadership of the London market, according to latest Rajars, as well as promote its expanded portfolio.
"As Heart continues to grow, Francis, in his new capacity, will be best placed to ensure the brand continues to deliver the very best output across its three major broadcast regions and its growing DAB digital radio platform," Riley said.
Francis is succeeded by Heart 106.2's programme controller Mark Browning. His priorities include promoting 'Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston' within the capital's highly competitive breakfast show battle for listeners. Theakston's show launched in April and is leading Heart's battle against Capital and its Johnny Vaughan breakfast show.
Earlier this month, Chrysalis predicted a decline in full-year radio revenues of as much as 6%. According to first-half figures, revenues dropped 2.2% to £32.6m due to weak advertising.
