Hearst set to withdraw funding <BR>of Talk magazine

NEW YORK - US publisher Hearst is on the verge of pulling out of its 50% share in celebrity gossip magazine Talk, leaving Miramax chairman Harvey Weinstein as the ailing title's sole supporter.

Hearst announced plans to withdraw its funding on March 31. The publisher is said to have been searching for months to find a replacement investor, having spent an estimated £28m in the two years since Talk was launched.

The set-back will be a major test of Weinstein's aspirations for the magazine. He was behind the push to recruit former New Yorker editor Tina Brown to be editor-in-chief and chairwoman of Talk.

The move, however, does not necessarily spell the end for the title. Insiders suspect that if Miramax is forced to foot the whole bill for Talk, famed for its high-profile celebrity parties, it will only be for a short while, until another investor is found.

In December, Daily Telegraph owner Lord Conrad Black was understood to be ready to take over Hearst's stake in the magazine. At the time, he was reported to be in advanced negotiations with Miramax.
