HBO and Gawker tie up for True Blood blog launch

LONDON - HBO has teamed up with the Gawker media network to create a blog around the Deep South-set vampire drama 'True Blood', which will air first in the UK on FX.

'True Blood' tells the story of a vampire living on artificial blood and coexisting with humans. It has won critical acclaim and 'X-Men' actress Anna Paquin won a Best Actress Golden Globe for her role in the show.

The '' blog, written from a recently-turned vampire's point of view, will run for three weeks prior to the second series' launch on June 14. Independent writers have been commissioned to create the copy.

The content will be syndicated throughout Gawker's sites including gadget site Gizmodo and gaming site Kotaku rather than run through a bespoke microsite.

Different versions of the blog will be created to cater for a site's particular audience.

However, the blog has received a mixed response from critics and viewers, and has been likened to a form of customer publishing, blurring the line between editorial and advertising.

One US site, The Business Insider, did not realise HBO was funding the project and reported Gawker was launching the blog as its own piece of editorial.

When the title realised it had made a mistake it later claimed when it sent out media information about the blog in the form of a party invite and failed to mention it was a commercial project.

The Business Insider view was backed up by . In a post on the site Gawker said it had not written the blog and pointed out 'BloodCopy' was the responsibility of its commercial team.

'True Blood' was created for HBO by 'Six Feet Under' creator Alan Ball and is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

Fox-owned FX's acquisition of the UK rights follows that of 'Generation Kill' from 'The Wire''s creators, David Simon and Ed Burns.

'True Blood' will make it across to terrestrial TV in October when it airs on Channel 4, which was also home to 'Six Feet Under'.
