Website ranking company Hitwise crowned the site the most popular recreation automotive site in the UK between July and September last year.
Dave Edmonston, who set up the site eight years ago, will continue to oversee the running of the site from Haymarket’s offices.
Haymarket, which also owns Media Week, said pistonheads.com would sit alongside the online brand extension of What Car? and Autocar magazines, aiming to attract advertisers wanting to target a car enthusiast audience.
