Hatfield tipped to edit Metro newspaper in New York

LONDON - Stefano Hatfield, the former editor of ±±¾©Èü³µpk10, is being tipped as the editor of Metro International's planned New York launch.

Reports suggest that Metro International is planning to launch a Metro title in New York some time in May or June and is currently recruiting staff for the title.

The launch would add to two existing US dailies Metro already publishes in the US in Philadelphia and Boston.

Metro International is refusing to comment on speculation concerning New York, but it did confirm that Hatfield was working with it on the editorial side of the company in Boston and Philadelphia.

There has been speculation that Metro International was planning a New York title for some time. This heightened in October last year when Tribune Company launched its free tabloid newspaper, amNew York.

The talk has been fuelled by ads that Metro International has been running in The New York Times looking for staff as part of an expansion of its East Coast operations.

Hatfield edited ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 magazine in London for three years until 1999 before moving to New York to become editorial director of Advertising Age Global and Creativity.

The Metro New York is reportedly based in the Citicorp Center and is being headed by publisher Henry Scott, who is a former New York Times executive and was president of Out magazine.

Metro had delayed its New York launch last year when the freebie amNew York debuted with backing from Tribune Co, the publisher of Newsday.

Since launch, amNewYork had racked up a daily circulation of 179,000, mainly in Manhattan.

However it is thought that Metro will widen its pitch more thoroughly in the six boroughs reaching out to Brooklyn, Queens and even to New Jersey.
