The move means Happold, one of the founding editors of GNM's newsblog "Comment is free", will oversee all digital multimedia at the company, reporting to GNM director of digital content Emily Bell.

The appointment comes as GNM prepares to move staff out of its London Farringdon office into a new home in Kings Cross; a move that will more closely align print and offline operations at The Guardian, The Observer and Guardian.co.uk.

Earlier this summer, GNM appointed five new cross-platform heads, as part of the publisher's push towards an integrated newsroom.

At the time, Alan Rusbridger, editor of The Guardian and editor-in-chief of Guardian News and Media, said: "These appointments are a crucial step towards delivering our vision of the future, providing news 24/7, while maintaining the distinctiveness of The Guardian and Observer."
