Taylor will be responsible for GMG Radio's commercial strategy across analogue, digital and online. He will report to John Myers, GMG Radio chief executive, and work with Julian Carter, director of sales.
A GMG spokesman said the company is looking to fill Taylor's former role but he will not move to his new post until September.
Myers said: "This is a new senior position within GMG Radio to help us unlock the enormous opportunities we see across a variety of different commercial platforms."
Taylor moves less than a year after missing out to Tim Brookes on being made managing director of Guardian Newspapers, which since became Guardian News & Media.
During that time, GMG's radio division was substantially expanded with the acquisition of five regional stations. It spent £60m on buying two Century FM stations from GCap and an undisclosed amount on Saga Radio -- including three stations and the licence to launch a fourth later this year.
