The app, which went on sale 14 December 2009 priced £2.39, has produced a further revenue stream for Guardian News & Media as it looks to offset falling print revenues.

Designed by an in-house team and built by 2ergo, the app for the iPhone and iPod touch showcases news, comment, features, photo galleries and audio, and also enables users to browse the latest content most relevant to them, even offline.

The app which launched in May 2009 delivers breaking news to handsets via text, images and video, filtered into a number of categories, including top stories, UK news, sport, business, world news and showbiz updates.

Trinity Mirror followed the Guardian launching its Mirrorfootball.co.uk and 3am.co.uk, plus Daily Mirror and Daily Record apps, for the iPhone last month.
