Guardian extends sponsored ads deal across network

LONDON - The Guardian is to carry sponsored links across its network of websites after extending its contextual advertising deal with Overture.

An existing deal, signed in 2002, put paid-placement listings on the Travel and Money channels. However, the new deal will apply to all the Guardian Unlimited and Observer websites.

At the same time, Overture said it had signed deals with the Financial Times and the Independent to provide sponsored links. Advertisements will appear on areas of FT.com such as markets and funds data, and on the Independent website's travel, jobs, sports and enjoyment sections.

The Belfast Telegraph has also signed an Overture deal that will result in ads appearing on its sports, property, jobs and lifestyle sections.

Adam Freeman, the head of commercial development at Guardian Unlimited, said: "Guardian Unlimited's new deal is further proof of how well this form of advertising works for online newspaper users."

He added: "Its relevancy and non-intrusive format has been extremely successful for us across our travel and money sites, and so this roll out right across our network is an excellent step forward for contextual online advertising."
