- Guardian Newspapers has named Carolyn McCall to succeed Caroline Marland as managing director. McCall, currently deputy managing director, will take over from Marland upon her retirement in November.
McCall, a former history teacher, has been with the Guardian since 1986 having held the roles of advertising director and commercial director before being promoted to deputy managing director in 1998.
The appointment comes as Guardian Newspapers, which publishes the Guardian and Observer newspapers, reports record advertising revenues for 1999 of £25 million.
Bob Phillis, chief executive of Guardian Media Group and chairman of Guardian Newspapers, said: "Carolyn McCall has made a major contribution to the commercial success of both the Guardian and the Observer during the last three years, as well as overseeing our ground breaking new media division in 1997."
He added: "I am greatly looking forward to working with Carolyn and her new team as we embark on the next phase of the company's development."
