Growth of deep-discounters slows again

LONDON - Customers attracted to deep discounters at the start of the economic recession have failed to be converted into loyal shoppers, according to the latest TNS Worldpanel research.

In the 12 weeks ending 9 August discounters' growth has slowed to 8.1%. At the end of last 2008 Aldi had seen growth of 26%

The strongest performer during the period was Waitrose which saw growth of 10.2%, ahead of the 5.6% sector average.

Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons on the other hand witnessed slight growth, but Tesco again dipped slightly. The UK's biggest supermarket chain's market share dropped from 31.2% to 31.0% for the period, compared with the same period of last year.
