Executives from the two ITV companies are understood to be in talks with ITV Digital administrator Nick Dargan from Deloitte & Touche about how much money the terrestrial digital service will need and how it would be used.
The government is also thought to have asked other terrestrial broadcasters, such as the BBC, to contribute to the survival of terrestrial digital broadcasting in the UK.
Carlton and Granada have been asked to provide £10m to secure ITV Digital's short-term future, while closing it down could cost £100m. The two have already spent around £1bn on the service since it was launched four years ago.
ITV Digital is waiting for the Independent Television Commission to announce the details of its sale today. The regulator will release a tender document, which it has produced in conjunction with ITV Digital's administrator.
Meanwhile, digital cable company Telewest has launched a responsive advertising campaign to try to lure ITV Digital customers living in Telewest franchise areas to switch to its digital cable service.
The ads, developed by Saatchi & Saatchi, will run for two weeks across The Sun, the Daily Mirror, the Daily Star, the Daily Express and Metro in London.
The ads run with the strapline "enough of the monkey business".
