The move was announced by Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of search products and user experience, on the company blog.
Mayer said: "Although this is a very simple idea and an even simpler change, we're excited about it because it symbolizes our focus on search and because it makes our clean, minimalist homepage even easier and more fun to use.
The new, larger Google search box also features larger text so queries can be seen more clearly.
It also uses a larger text size for the suggestions below the search box, making it easier to select one of the possible refinements.
Google has made a number of changes to its homepage during the past 11 years, .
However, this latest move has received a lukewarm response in the blogosphere. Matt McGee, on the Search Engine Land, blogged: "Fresh off of patenting its home page design, Google is throwing caution to the wind and messing with success -- It's making its search boxes bigger. Gasp!"
Arnold Zafra wrote on Search Engine Journal: "Google is not just going to let Apple dominate the news today with their new product announcement and Steve Jobs re-appearance on Apple's stage."
