Google confirms acquisition of social tech company Slide

Google has confirmed it has acquired the social technology company Slide as part of its plan to extend its reach into the social web.

The deal is worth $228m, according to the New York Times, and is part of Google’s strategy to develop more social networking services. Although it already has Google Buzz, YouTube and chat services in Gmail, Google is in the process of .

Slide makes a range of games and add-ons that can be incorporated into social networking sites. It is behind products like ‘Super Poke’ and ‘Top Friends’ for Facebook.

David Glazer, engineering director at Google, said that there were "no detailed product plans right now", .

Glazer said: "For Google, the web is about people, and we’re working to develop open, transparent and interesting (and fun!) ways to allow our users to take full advantage of how technology can bring them closer to friends and family and provide useful information just for them."

Slide founder Max Levchin is joining Google as part of the deal. Levchin was previously chief technology officer at PayPal.
