GMG Radio wins Yorkshire license

Guardian Media Group Radio has been awarded the Yorkshire regional radio licence by the Radio Authority and is due to launch its Real Radio format early next year.

The Yorkshire licence is one of the biggest regional licenses to be awarded by the Radio Authority before it becomes part of the new regulatory body Ofcom.

GMG Radio launched Real Radio in South Wales last October. The Yorkshire service will be GMG's third commercial radio station. Last month GMG purchased Scot FM from The Wireless Group for £25.5m and will develop a similar format for the station over the coming months.

Managing director of GMG Radio, John Myers said: "This transforms GMG Radio into a major radio force. It rewards GMG for its commitment to radio and we look forward to entertaining Yorkshire."
