Gervais' hit comedy Extras to run for three years

LONDON - Ricky Gervais' BBC Two comedy vehicle 'Extras' is likely to run for three years and he has already approached stars, including Madonna and Tom Cruise, to feature in the second series.

Gervais, speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, confirmed he was looking to run the series for three years and wants there to be enough episodes so he can release a box set.

He has already spoken to Madonna and "her people" about starring in the next series on BBC Two, after she said Gervais was her favourite comedian when she met him at the Live 8 concert in July.

Gervais, who was joined by co-writer Stephen Merchant during the Richard Dunn memorial interview, hinted that Hollywood actors Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio were other potential stars lined up for the next series.

Gervais also said that he and Merchant were looking to develop the show's characters so they are not overshadowed by the celebrities. He ruled out characters Maggie and Andy Millman getting romantically involved and said Shaun Williams, who played Barry in 'EastEnders', was going to get a larger role as his agent's assistant.

Gervais was also quizzed on who his favourite comedian was. He said that Richard Briers' role in 'Ever Decreasing Circles' was legendary.

Merchant, when asked the same question, looked at Gervais and the interviewer before choosing Shaun Williams.

Gervais also went on to to joke about Jude Law's fling with his nanny. "We were beginning to think we were the only thing he said no to," he said.

Law famously pulled out of appearing in the first series of 'Extras' citing a hectic work schedule.
