Robinson, who is credited with engineering the split of Granada's leisure and media business, relinquished the top role at Granada following the split and was replaced by current chairman Charles Allen.
The reasons for his decision to leave the company are unclear, but it is expected that he will continue in his role as chairman of Allied Domecq, which he took up in January.
Granada has begun headhunting for a replacement for Robinson, who currently holds a non-executive director role, to fill the position by the time he leaves in February.
The announcement is the second high-profile senior management departure at the company this week.
Yesterday, chief executive Steve Morrison took early retirement from the company, effectively leaving control of the company in Allen's hands.
With Morrison's departure, Granada streamlined its board ahead of a potential merger with fellow ITV company Carlton Communications.
Sir George Russell, a former ITC chairman and deputy chairman of Channel 4, has been appointed non-executive chairman to work with Allen in his new post of executive chairman.
The company has created two chief executive posts below board level to ensure the company retains the 6:3 ratio of non-executive to executive directors.
Mick Desmond, currently joint managing director of ITV until a chief executive is found, has been appointed chief executive of broadcasting and enterprises. Simon Shaps is chief executive of content. Both will report to the board and attend board meetings.
Allen said: "This new management structure positions Granada well to take advantage of consolidation and other opportunities made possible through new legislation."
He added that he had consulted shareholders about the new structure and had won their support.
