LONDON - General Motors (GM) has appointed McCann Erickson Frankfurt to handle the £70m advertising account for the pan-European launch of its latest Astra model.

General Motors assigns £70m European Astra advertising task to McCann

The agency picked up the business following a pitch against Lowe Germany and DLKW. The latter handled the marketing for the previous Astra launch in 2004.

DLKW also devised the launch advertising for the Corsa and Insignia models in 2006 and 2009 respectively, while Lowe promoted the Zafira and Meriva models that were rolled out in 2007.

GM will unveil the Astra at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The launch of the integrated campaign is pencilled in for December.

The launch of the model will mark the first heavyweight marketing campaign for Opel and Vauxhall since GM announced plans to sell its European businesses.

The two car marques are subject to bids by Canadian components manufacturer Magna and Belgian private equity firm RHJ, with a final decision expected in the next two weeks.
