GDA backer claims edge over FSA's traffic lights

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has released two studies as part of an aggressive campaign to push its food-labelling system, Guideline Daily Amounts, over the Food Standards Agency's traffic-light scheme.

The first study, which was commissioned by the charity Farming and Countryside Education, found the GDA label to be the most recognisable and influential among more than 1000 secondary-school children.

When shown eight different food labels, 85% of the children recognised the GDA label, while 69% recognised the traffic-light scheme.

The GDA system was also identified as the most helpful when it came to making purchasing decisions, with the Fairtrade logo squeezing the traffic-light scheme into third place.

A second survey, commissioned by the FDF, asked readers of Take a Break to identify and interpret sample GDA labels. Of the 4000 respondents, 84% had heard of the scheme, 93% found them easy to understand and 86% interpreted their nutritional information correctly.

The research comes as the Food and Drink Federation rolls out a series of advertorials and leaflets as part of its 'What's inside guide' work.
