GCap seeks new revenue source from phone-in quiz show

LONDON - GCap Media is aiming to make money from premium-rate phone calls by bringing in a new late-night radio quiz show, free from ad breaks and light on music.

'Cash Call' will be live every Sunday morning from midnight until 2am across most of GCap's One network stations. The first show will be on air during the next few weeks.

Capital Radio presenter Chris Brooks will take listeners through a series of quizzes such as 'Mystery Voice' and 'Guess the Noise', with at least £1,500 to be won each week. Calling in to get a chance of getting picked as an on-air contestant costs 75p a minute.

Dirk Anthony, group programming manager at GCap, said: "Radio is at its best when it's interactive and prize competitions have always been a popular format with our listeners.

"By creating a dedicated quiz show, we're giving listeners a great new way of interacting with the station while implementing our strategy to develop new revenue opportunities."

GCap commissioned the show from radio and TV producer Somethin' Else and Optimistic Media, the participation and entertainment TV production arm of Optimistic Entertainment, which was behind Channel 4 show 'Flipside TV'. The two have struck up a global partnership to produce participation quiz shows for radio.

Revenues from the show will be split between GCap, Somethin' Else and the premium phoneline operator.
