GCap removes presenters from digital station Core

LONDON - GCap Media is to take all 12 of the presenters on its national digital pop station Core off-air to turn it into a non-stop music station, following its poor performance in the latest Rajar radio audience figures.

Friday March 30 will be the last day the station broadcasts shows such as Allan Lake's breakfast show and other shows featuring presenters Sophie Bruce and Rebecca Eames.

Form October to December 2006, Core averaged 98,000 listeners a week, which was a 23.4% drop on the previous quarter and a 5.8% drop on the equivalent quarter in 2005, according to the most recent Rajar figures.

The result led GCap to start a review of the station, for which the programme controller is Bern Leckie. Leckie is also programme controller of Chill.

The spokeswoman described the review as "continuing" after the decision to axe the presenters, with the focus on how to make Core work as a product.

The spokeswoman said there were 12 DJs on the station, nine of which were also employed on other GCap stations.

In contrast to Core, TheJazz is set to introduce presenters over the Easter weekend in the second phase of its launch. The national digital jazz station went on air on Christmas Day with music-only output.

The digital station was previously wholly sponsored by Orange mobile, in a deal brokered by Initiative Media.
