GCap Media's theJazz set to launch record label

GCap Media's jazz radio station, theJazz, will launch its own record label this spring, after signing a deal with Universal Classics and Jazz.

The national digital station's first release will be 'Come into the Cool', followed by 'The Very Best of Latin Jazz', with both releases in a double CD compilation format.

Giles Pearman, GCap's head of commercial enterprises, negotiated the contract with Dickon Stainer, Managing Director of UCJ.

Stainer said: "Working with an exciting new brand like theJazz gives us a unique opportunity to develop new markets for jazz music, traditional and contemporary. TheJazz is a fantastic platform for jazz artists of all kinds."

TheJazz began transmission on Christmas Day 2006 in test mode, with a jukebox-style format and no presenters. It launched fully during Easter 2007, with presenters that include former Capital hosts David Jensen and Margherita Taylor.

The station is hoping to build a strong audience base as the UK's main jazz station, now that GMG's Jazz FM has rebranded as Smooth and stopped playing jazz.

Darren Henley, MD of theJazz said: "Like Classic FM, theJazz will be a truly multi-platform brand. We're delighted to be working with UCJ, the UK's most successful jazz record company, on the first of these brand extensions."
