She will edit the Saturday edition of the FT, as well as the Weekend FT supplement and oversee all the weekend special sections.
Freeland, 34, is currently the editor of FT.com -- a role she will continue to handle for the time being. The FT has a recruitment freeze on, as the advertising downturn has seen profits slump, forcing parent company Pearson to make cost cuts.
In July, it announced that it was closing the Business magazine that was launched by Cuthbertson and came with the Saturday edition of the newspaper.
Freeland has also worked on The Globe & Mail, Toronto and was the UK news editor for the FT from 1998 to 1999. She has also had earlier stints at the newspaper as the Eastern Europe correspondent and Moscow bureau chief. She is a graduate of Harvard College and a Rhodes scholar, with a masters in Slavonic studies.
Andrew Gowers, editor of the FT, said: "I am delighted to appoint Chrystia into this key role. She is a dynamic and creative journalist and will spearhead our efforts to revamp the Weekend FT."
