Hawkins will become the top marketer at UK Broadband, taking on the role of senior vice-president for sales and marketing. He will start in the next few weeks.
The company plans to launch a wireless broadband network nationwide, competing with firms such as BT and T-Mobile. It will operate a consumer service and sell wholesale to third parties.
Hawkins was at market-leading ISP Freeserve for three years. He was responsible for helping the business reach profitability at the end of last year and for ending its distribution partnership with the Dixons Store Group. Prior to that, he was marketing director at rival AOL.
Freeserve chief executive Eric Abensur will take on Hawkins' responsibilities in the short term, including all marketing activity. The company has appointed headhunters to find a replacement.
