Fox to bring Pop Idol to the States

nullnullnullnullnullnullnullLONDON - US television network Fox has signed a deal with Pop Idol's creator Simon Fuller to bring the show to the US in a deal which is believed to be worth around $50m (£34.9m).

Fox will air 15 episodes of the show, which will be called American Idol, this summer with the hope that it will emulate the success of the show in the UK, where as many as 8.7m voted in the final show.

Fuller, who was the former manager of the Spice Girls, will, in addition to selling the News Corporation-owned station the format, also benefit from lucrative sponsorship and telephone revenue-sharing deals.

The deal has been negotiated with Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, the former head of light entertainment at LWT who brought the series Pop Stars to ITV, out of which Hear'Say were formed. He joined Fuller's company 19 Television last year to develop similar programming.
