Earth Hour’s panda stunt

To raise awareness for Earth Hour, the WWF have sent out a host of ‘pandas’ into UK towns and cities this week. They visited Woking, Newcastle, Manchester and Kingston, engaging with passers by and spreading the word about the event.

South Bank, London

Earth Hour has teamed up with South Bank in London for some awareness-raising experiences. From 20-27 March the destination is running a ‘Where’s Panda?’ Facebook competition, while the Sea Containers, Skylon and the OXO Tower Restaurant, Bar & Brasserie will be hosting Dinner by Candlelight food events.

The South Bank will be plunged into darkness from 8.30-9.30pm on the night, with landmarks such as the Coca-Cola London Eye, the Southbank Centre and the National Theatre switching off their lights. The OXO Tower will mark the hour with a surprise display.

George Square, Glasgow

Glasgow City Council was awarded WWF Scotland’s ‘Super local authority’ accolade for its Earth Hour activities in 2014. This year it aims to go bigger, hosting events such as a glow in the dark bike ride, cycle power demonstrations and an energy-generating dance mat by Pavegen.

Bailie Liz Cameron, chairwoman of Green Year 2015, said: "This year is all about raising awareness of the changes we can make to our everyday lives to help protect our environment, and Earth Hour is a simple but spectacular way of achieving this.

"I hope that everyone will switch off their lights for one hour and come and join us for the free, fun and, above all, 'green' activities in George Square."

Sustainable Restaurant Association

Members of the Sustainable Restaurants Association will be turning their lights out for Earth Hour, giving customers the experience of dinner by candlelight. Participating branches of Wahaca are taking part, as well as The Savoy and The Hospital Club in London.
