Formula 1 teams to unite for sponsor hunt

LONDON - Formula 1 teams including Jordan, British American Racing and BMW Williams are planning to market the sport collectively for the first time in the wake of the uproar surrounding Ferrari's victory in the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend.

The teams are seeking a summit with F1 chiefs, including the sport's supremo Bernie Ecclestone, to discuss ways in which they can form a united front to market the sport to potential sponsors.

The move follows fears that the end of tobacco sponsorship and the rising cost of running an F1 outfit could lead to the demise of some teams. The meeting was given added urgency by the furore caused by Ferrari's decision to order race leader Rubens Barrichello to allow Michael Schumacher to win the Austrian Grand Prix.

Ferrari backers including Shell and Vodafone said the win was "a matter for Ferrari".
